Ghana has one of the highest deforestation rates in Africa at
over 3%, and agriculture, led by cocoa farming expansion into forest areas and loss of shade trees,
is the main driver of deforestation across the cocoa-forest mosaic landscape, which encompasses
about 6 million hectares of the High Forest Zone. Ghana's economy and smallholder livelihoods are
highly dependent on agricultural production and Ghana is the world's second largest producer of
cocoa beans. However, climate change presents a major risk to the cocoa sector given its dependence
on rainfall and forest ecosystem services.
The Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme is the world's first commodity-based emission reductions
programme. Using a climate-smart cocoa production strategy, the GCFRP aims to significantly reduce
emissions driven by deforestation and forest degradation, while improving smallholder farmers'
livelihoods through substantial yield increases and other benefit-sharing arrangements.
The programme will also make Ghana's cocoa and forestry sectors more resilient, while establishing
a new asset class and revenue stream from climate-smart cocoa beans, validated against a landscape
standard.
This unique and highly ambitious programme is being co-lead by the National REDD+ Sectretariat of
the Forestry Commission and Ghana's Cocoa Board, with unprecedented support from the chocolate industry
and companies along its value chain, as well as a strong commitment to support implementation from
other government agencies and civil society partners.
